Trade Talk - Jenny Layton Mills - Brecon & Knighton Market - McCartneys LLP
8th February 2021
Variety is the spice of life, as they say, and I have now taken up the exciting challenge of selling and being partner in charge at Brecon Market, on behalf of McCartneys.
I have a good young team of fellow auctioneers in Lloyd Humphreys and Tom Pritchard at Brecon to train and back me up. I also continue to sell the store cattle and finished lambs at Knighton Market, with auctioneer and partner Katie Davies selling cull, store and breeding sheep.
Brecon is a wonderful modern market located with great road networks to South, West and Mid Wales, together with the Midlands. Last week we started the year with a sale of 600 store cattle, which was probably one of the dearest ever seen.
We had a good show of 70 cull cows, which averaged 158.59ppk and £1086 per head selling to £1,800.
The show of feeding bulls, steers and heifers are a real credit to all the vendors, and overall averaged £1165 per head. The plainer store order cattle were just as dear, showing that we can sell quality and plainer cattle in Brecon. We are very lucky to have purchasers from all part of the UK who make the trip for the numbers once a month.
Brecon finished hogget and cull ewes were an excellent trade last Tuesday, with hoggets to average 263ppk and cull ewes £78 per head. Brecon now has 7 buyers present every week and we hope once the new season lambs start we will have new and old vendors returning from all parts of South and West Wales.
I look forward to meeting new and old clients in 2021 in both Brecon and Knighton and hope that the Covid vaccine is rolled out in time for our busy autumn period.
