Trade Talk by James Morrish

16th December 2016

Christmas is always a special time at Kivells Markets with quality and quantity in abundance. This year's shows saw hundreds of people in attendance to witness the judging of over 700 cattle, sheep and pigs with the 2016 Supreme Champion being 'Hot tottie' a 17mth old Limousin heifer from M/S Calcraft of Honiton reaching a fantastic 410 p/kg and £2,476. Next week will see the sale of over 3,500 'oven ready' turkeys, geece, hams & other local produce on the special days when 'town folk meet rural folk' with both enjoying a great day at market.

It is pleasing to see the value of dairy cattle strengthen considerably of late with our Christmas sale at Holsworthy Market in North Devon seeing a top call of £2,450 awarded to the Ley Family of Sutcombe whilst the freshly calved heifers hit a massive £2,350 for M/s Littlejohns & Son who farm on the edge of the North Coast near Hartland.

A wise farmer once told me that "every long journey starts with a small step", well that certainly is the case in our pigs sales. Numbers at both Exeter & Holsworthy have increased greatly over the past couple of years and new total between 220-250 every sale with last Fridays Market seeing the best of the 73 cull sows at £236 and the best prime pigs upwards of £130.

Since 1885 Kivells have always put the community at the heart of everything we do. This year we have had the pleasure of raising over £121,000 for charities and good causes through charity auctions and fundraising events throughout the South West of England. To me, there is no better industry to be part of than British Agriculture. After all without British Farmers, there would be no wonderfully coloured countryside for walkers to enjoy, no fantastic locally produced food to eat & most importantly of all, no-one to drive our rural economy which is vital in so many ways.

On behalf of Directors & Staff of Kivells can I wish you all a Merry Christmas & a Happy, Prosperous New Year.
